NTSB releases preliminary report on fatal plane crash near Oshkosh

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A plane crash that killed two people is still under investigation. The NTSB has released a preliminary report but has not yet released any details about the cause of the crash.

The crash occurred on July 22 at approximately 12:12 p.m. The NTSB said the aircraft, a Lancair ES, N18BG, was destroyed upon impact with a soybean field near Oshkosh.

According to the preliminary report:

A preliminary review of air traffic control records and ADS-B data showed that the aircraft was en route to the Fisk target when the controller instructed the pilot to extend his turn for an L-29 and an L-39 landing ahead of him. The pilot confirmed “in sight” and then initiated a left turn. The pilot was then cleared to land on the yellow dot on runway 36L and confirmed the clearance.

The aircraft impacted a soybean field south of N Road, approximately 1.5 miles from the approach end of Runway 36L. After impact, a fire broke out, destroying the aircraft.

The preliminary report states that the main wreckage consists of the fuselage, tail unit and both wings. The aircraft was recovered from the crash site and preserved for further investigation.

The two dead were the pilot and the passenger. There was no one else on board the plane.
