“It’s a miracle that no one died”

DOTHAN, Alabama (WTVY) – A 17-year-old is facing charges after he fired several shots into a park in Dothan’s historic Garden District Friday night, according to police.

“According to witnesses and the suspect, the suspect, a 17-year-old male, was angry at the victim because she had not given him her phone number earlier in the day at school,” Dothan police Lt. Scott Owens said in a statement. “At Solomon Park, the suspect saw the victim with her boyfriend and opened fire with a 9mm handgun.”

He said no one was injured in the gunshot wound, which came after the suspect spotted the girl with her boyfriend, and officers took the suspect into custody after a traffic stop.

“The Dothan Police Department takes this type of behavior very seriously and will hold anyone who engages in this type of behavior accountable under the law,” Owens said. “It is a miracle that no one was injured or killed as a result of this suspect’s actions.”

Investigators charged the teenager with attempted assault.

Due to a relatively new law in Alabama, officials are not allowed to release the suspect’s name, even though he is charged as an adult.
