Trump receives additional protection from the Secret Service and bulletproof glass at campaign events

About two and a half months before election day, security authorities are trying to increase the security of candidates.

Former President Donald Trump will now be equipped with bulletproof glass at his rallies, which have been held indoors since the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania about a month ago.

Bulletproof glass is already available for sitting presidents and vice presidents.

According to the New York Times, the Secret Service has pulled agents from President Joe Biden’s staff and temporarily assigned them to protect Trump. It’s an unusual move, but the Times reports, citing an unnamed Secret Service official: “The increased threat of violence against Mr. Trump, combined with Mr. Biden’s recently reduced travel schedule, made the move both necessary and feasible.”

These additional security measures for Trump come as the Secret Service faces intense scrutiny over its preparation for the now-infamous rally in Pennsylvania – or not. Earlier this month, acting Secret Service Director Ronald L. Rowe, Jr. called the rally a “failure.”

On Thursday, Republican Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana, who is on the House task force investigating the attempted murder, released a preliminary report saying that after Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight shots, a member of a local SWAT team fired one shot that “hit Crooks’ rifle stock.”

Higgins wrote: “He stopped Crooks and, more importantly, I believe the shot damaged the buffer tube on Crooks’ AR. I won’t be sure of this until I can examine Crooks’ rifle, but I’m 99% sure.”

As the investigation continues, Secret Service officials have their hands full in the coming weeks before the election. Officials are preparing for the start of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday, when two presidential debates and a vice presidential debate are expected to take place.
