Ukrainian hackers block the work of a Russian nuclear weapons manufacturer

Cyber activists from the “BO Team” attacked the Russian Internet provider Vega, which led to the blocking of the work of, among others, the All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics, which develops nuclear weapons.

The activists told Ukrinform this.

“The successful hunt for the cyber activists of the BO team continues. The next victim was the Internet service provider Vega from the city of Snezhinsk, Chelyabinsk Region (the closed administrative-territorial formation Chelyabinsk-70, known since Soviet times). The results exceeded expectations. More than 1173 switches of the provider and 10 servers of the company were disabled, and the information stored on them was completely destroyed. As a result, the provision of Internet and communication services to a number of strategic enterprises of the city was blocked for five days in a row, and the prospects for their full restoration leave much to be desired…” the statement says.

According to the BO team that claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, Vega is the only Internet provider in the city. At the same time, one of the city’s key enterprises, VNIITF (All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics), a developer of nuclear weapons, is connected only to this provider.

“The most important thing our hackers stole was personal data and documents from this facility, which is under sanctions. Based on their information, it is already possible to see who is helping the institute to circumvent them and how. Extensive correspondence and comments on local social media platforms indicate that the cyberattack could disrupt the state’s defense procurement contract. By the way, BO Team gladly takes full responsibility for this disruption and promises that it will not be the last,” the cyber activists said.

They added that the Russian company itself could not think of anything better than simply reporting that its communications network infrastructure had been attacked, but promised to put everything in order by mid-August 17.

“However, we tend to believe the predictions of the cyber warriors of the BO team, who say that it is possible … but ‘after the rain on Thursday’ and then when ‘the cancer whistles on the mountain,'” the activists concluded.

As Ukrinform previously reported, a volunteer hacker community together with cyber specialists from the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service attacked about 100 Russian web resources on July 15. According to DIU representative Andriy Yusov, this attack on Russian cyberspace was very successful.
