According to a report from The Verge, Google required tech influencers who received Pixel 9 devices before the official release not to show them next to competing products or claim a preference for other brands. These conditions were part of the Team Pixel program, which tech experts can join by invitation only.

The agreement with Team Pixel specified that tech experts must use Google Pixel devices rather than competing devices. Google’s communications manager Kayla Geier acknowledged that the wording was flawed and has already been removed. Some reviewers have left the program because they believe their ability to provide honest reviews is at risk. Google stressed that the Team Pixel program is designed to sell devices to content creators, not press and tech reviewers.
