Trump reportedly resumes outdoor rallies as Secret Service ramps up details

Former President Donald Trump is expected to resume holding outdoor rallies after the New York Times reported that the Secret Service approved a plan to increase security at such events.

Citing anonymous sources, the New York Times reported that bulletproof glass will be installed at Trump rallies. The agency will also reportedly pull agents from President Joe Biden’s staff to assist with Trump’s security.

The New York Times reported that the bulletproof glass had been used at previous events for Secret Service security personnel, but that the material was heavy and logistically difficult to transport.

He was seen standing behind a glass wall outside Trump’s rally in Washington on January 6, 2021. Later, then-White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson revealed to the House Committee on January 6 that Trump had asked for the gun-detecting magnetometers to be removed outside the rally.

The rally took place ahead of the counting of Electoral College votes in the 2020 election, which was interrupted by the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Trump has not held any outdoor rallies since he was injured by a gunman at an event in Pennsylvania on July 13. Before the shooting, Trump had frequently held outdoor rallies during his campaign.

Trump, who was wounded in the right ear in the attack, was giving a speech to supporters when a gunman fired several shots at him from a nearby rooftop. The incident has put the agency under intense scrutiny as questions have arisen about how a gunman was able to get to the rooftop so close to the rally and fire directly at the former president before he was fatally wounded by Secret Service agents.

One day before she resigned as Director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle told Congress that the incident was the “Secret Service’s most significant operational failure in decades.”
