Shots fired near Laney-Westside football game

The high school football game between Laney and Westside was canceled Friday night after shots were fired during the game.

According to a press release from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Westside assistant football coach Chris Crayton, the shooting allegedly occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Augusta Court and Blounts Avenue during the third quarter of the game.

According to the sheriff’s office, no victims of the shooting were initially found, but a search of the area found bullet casings and property damage.

“At this time, it appears that all shots were fired outside the stadium,” the press release said. “Investigators are on site and no further information will be released at this time.”

According to Crayton, Westside led 7-6 in the third quarter with less than a minute left on the clock.
