What to watch this weekend, August 16, 2024: TV award contenders

“Bad Monkey” is anything but that. Vince Vaughn Stars in the entertaining Apple TV+ adaptation of Carl Hiaasens 2013 novel about a former Miami police detective living in the Florida Keys. After being suspended for throwing his lover’s husband’s golf cart into the ocean, Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) now has plenty of free time. When a tourist discovers a severed arm while deep-sea fishing, he is intrigued by the strange circumstances, especially when the man’s young widow (Meredith Hagner) shows up to pick up the appendage for a funeral.

The series, the first two episodes of which are now streaming, was developed and produced by Emmy winner Bill Lawrenceand balances a gripping central mystery with a keen sense of humor. With Vaughn’s trademark charm and bite in full glory and a Tom Petty-inspired soundtrack, “Bad Monkey,” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

But you don’t have to end your TV jet-set trip in Florida – other candidates are:

  • “Emily in Paris”: If you haven’t had enough of the French capital after the Summer Olympics, Netflix’s lighthearted romantic comedy returns this week with the first half of its 10-episode fourth season. The new episodes pick up after the wedding that never happened (and the baby bombshell that came with it) and find Emily (Lily Collins) tries to save her relationship with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) to Camille (Camille Razat) revealed that the American marketing expert was in love with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) all the time. All five episodes of Part I are now streaming on Netflix.
  • “OceanXplorers”: Nobody loves anything as much as James Cameron loves the sea, which is why it’s no surprise that the Oscar-winning director has produced this new series about a team of scientists and experts aboard the state-of-the-art research vessel OceanXplorer. Across six episodes, the team explores the depths of the world’s oceans, from the Arctic to the Caribbean to the mid-Atlantic, pushing the boundaries of marine science and uncovering the mysteries of the deep. The show is co-produced by BBC Studios’ Emmy-winning Natural History Unit, which is behind some of the best and most insightful documentary series of the past few decades. The two-episode premiere will be Sunday at 9/8c on National Geographic. Episodes will stream Monday on Hulu and Disney+.
  • “RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars”: The Emmy-winning reality competition franchise is going global (which you probably guessed from the title). For the first time, 12 queens from around the world will represent their countries and compete for a cash prize of $200,000 and the chance to be crowned “Queen of the Mothertucking World.” Contestants include Alyssa Edwards, Athena Likis, Eva LeQueen, Gala Varo, Kitty Scott Claus, Kween Kong, Miranda Lebrao, Nehellenia, Pythia, Soul of the Muse, Tessa Testicles And vanity. The first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.
