I am a fan of stop motion animation and there are few studios that consistently produce better stop motion films than Laika. In 2009, Laika Studios burst onto the scene with Corallinea dark fantasy film about a girl who discovers an alternate reality in her house. After that, the studio continued to land hits with films like ParaNorman And Kubo – The Brave SamuraiIt has been five years since Laika’s last film, but the drought is almost over with Wildwood.

On Friday, Laika Studios released a teaser for Wildwooda stop-motion film based on the 2011 fantasy children’s novel of the same name. The story follows seventh-graders Prue McKeel and Curtis Mehlberg – two best friends who embark on a journey through an enchanted forest to find Prue’s little brother Mac, who has been kidnapped by a flock of crows.

Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Doogie Kameāloha, MD) will lend his voice to Prue, while Jacob Tremblay (Room) will provide the voice of Curtis. The extensive vocal ensemble also includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Tom Waits, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal and Richard E. Grant.

Travis Knight, CEO of Laika Studios, who previously directed Kubo – The Brave Samurai as well as the Transformers spin off bumblebeehelmeted Wildwood.

This film has been in the works for years, and Laika announced plans to adapt the book back in 2011. In a recent interview with Empire MagazineKnight said that Wildwood is “the hardest thing we’ve ever done,” explaining that Laika Studios had to “build the creative tools, the technology and our storytelling power to do this book justice.”

Wildwood does not have a release date yet, but the film is finally scheduled to hit theaters in 2025.
