Dump truck collides with railroad bridge in Beechview, causing even more traffic problems

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A railroad bridge was hit near a busy area of ​​Beechview Friday morning.

The dump truck collided with the scaffolding and dislodged it from its anchorage. Now they are waiting for a crane to come and take it down.

Mayor Ed Gainey’s office confirmed that the accident occurred this morning or overnight and that the dump truck may have struck the underside of the railroad bridge. They added that it was not a city-owned vehicle and that the railroad company is now assessing the damage.

Sources told KDKA they became aware of the problem when someone was doing a safety check on the railroad overnight and that it was a Wheeling & Erie Railway bridge that was no longer in use.

They said one of the two bridges was not hit and that the older bridge will be demolished.

It is expected that it will take approximately 4 to 5 hours to erect the crane. It will then take another 2 to 3 hours to dismantle the bridge. Finally, it will take another 4 to 5 hours to dismantle the crane.

The crane and crews are currently en route and are expected to arrive within the next hour.

Meanwhile, Duquesne Light was on site to shut off power so crews could safely set up the crane.

The accident occurred at a time when PennDOT had closed the section of Route 51 between Crane Avenue and Woodruff to demolish the bridge at Woodruff at the foot of Mount Washington, which was a nuisance to motorists.

We have reached out to Wheeling and Erie Railway for comment and are awaiting their response.
