Town are looking forward to returning to the top flight after a 22-year absence: “The group has worked so hard for the opportunity we have this season. The fans have been waiting for this for a long time. It’s a big excitement. We know how big the challenge is and what lies ahead, but it’s going to be a wonderful season.”

McKenna feels well prepared for the new season: “We’ve had a long preparation. We’re seven weeks into it now. We’ve had some good games and feel as prepared as we can be. We’ve had some challenges and a smaller group than we wanted, so it’s been a really busy summer. We’re looking forward to seeing the fruits of that hard work.”

On Saturday’s game, the first Premier League game at Portman Road since 2002: “I’m sure the stadium will look fantastic. The fans will be great and we’re already looking forward to the game.”

On Ed Sheeran’s minority stake in the club: “It was really nice and he has been there ever since I’ve been at the club. I know he is a lifelong and very passionate fan. He is a global superstar and one of the most talented musicians in the world and the fact that he supports what we do is a huge boost for the football club. We are really grateful.”

McKenna raved about the qualities of new signing Sammie Szmodics, both on and off the pitch: “He’s a learner – he’s a worker and he’s always trying to improve. He’s worked his way through the leagues and has earned his chance in the Premier League. That fits in with our squad. I think from a cultural point of view he’s a fantastic fit. He has a shared history with the club. He has a family that supports the club and he’s a very good player. In every respect we’re very happy to have him here.”
