“Looks like it was tailored for you”

Shoppers can find absolutely anything from cookware to blankets at thrift stores, and one trend is people finding their dream wedding dress at a bargain price.

A Reddit user shared her amazing find of a nearly pristine white dress on r/ThriftStoreHauls. The post features several photos of the user in a pretty white dress, including a few close-ups of the dress details. “$10 wedding dress!?” wrote the original poster. “I’m in love with this dress from (Goodwill)!! I think it works as an evening dress too because of the length.”

Shopping secondhand is one of the easiest ways to save money on everyday purchases. Simply swapping half of your new clothes for secondhand items can save you around $100 a year. When you add specialty items like occasion dresses, cookware and home goods, those savings can grow exponentially.

The New York Times wrote about the phenomenon of secondhand wedding dresses in early 2024, interviewing several brides who found designer dresses at affordable prices, “(which) reflects the growing movement toward circular fashion, the idea of recycling and reusing clothing.”

According to online secondhand shop ThredUp, the secondhand market is set to grow significantly in the next few years. Its 2024 report states that the global secondhand market will “reach $350 billion” by 2028. This trend is good for the planet because it helps reduce fast fashion consumption and keeps textile waste out of landfills.

The commenters on the post were very happy for the buyer. One said: “Looks like it was tailor-made for you.”

Someone else wrote, “Congratulations! Now save that extra money for your honeymoon!!” The OP replied, “I need to find a husband first. Lol!”

Another commenter suggested, “You can always wear it with a fun belt and a denim jacket to make it more casual. Or dye it black and wear it whenever you want. It really looks great on you.”
