VAR: Mark Clattenburg says referees can no longer rely on VAR

In May, Wolves launched a vote to scrap the VAR system as anger and frustration grew over the quality of refereeing and the impact of technology on football last season.

They lost the vote, but the Premier League has promised to improve VAR.

This season, the top division is placing more emphasis on the “referee’s decision” and wants the VAR to intervene in subjective decisions only when that decision is a clear and obvious error.

It was also announced this week that the Premier League Match Centre will publish explanations of VAR decisions on X to fans “almost live”.

“Some steps forward had to be taken because there was a lot of excitement and a lot of complaints last year,” Clattenburg said.

“Last season I was able to observe the level of refereeing closely. It was very difficult for Howard as he lost experienced referees in a short space of time.

“To counterbalance this, I saw some very good young referees. You could see their talent. But just as young footballers make mistakes, young referees will also make mistakes.”

“I felt that a young referee needed an experienced VAR to assist him.

“At the moment we only have two or three referees at the biggest games.

“Anthony Taylor, one of the best referees in the Premier League, will be refereeing the biggest game of the weekend (Chelsea v Manchester City) and that happens almost every week with him and Michael Oliver. It’s a big challenge for a referee to referee these games week in week out.”
