Princess Eugenie broke royal tradition with her second wedding dress

In case you missed it, Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank on Friday (October 12), and by all accounts, the second royal wedding looked pretty incredible from start to finish. For the actual ceremony, she wore a stunning collared dress by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos that was full of poignant details, like embroidery representing places close to her heart (a shamrock for Ireland, for example) and an open back that showed off a scar from childhood scoliosis surgery. But it wouldn’t be a royal wedding without an outfit change—and Princess Eugenie’s second dress broke with tradition in a big way.

For the couple’s evening wedding reception, Princess Eugenie opted for a custom-made dress by American designer Zac Posen—a surprising choice, given that it’s common for British royals to wear British designers for such occasions. (Meghan Markle donned an ensemble by Stella McCartney, while Kate Middleton chose a second Alexander McQueen design by Sarah Burton for her own post-ceremony festivities.) That wasn’t the only departure from tradition: Instead of classic white or ivory, her second dress was in shades of red. And the result is stunning.

Posen is known for his romantic, ethereal designs – and this one was no different: Princess Eugenie’s dress was made from pleated silk (from a British mill, of course) and folded in elegant, almost Art Deco folds from the neck to the waist before cascading down to the floor. It’s a mix of old Hollywood and royal majesty – and it’s stunning.

According to the palace, the blush color is a nod to an English rose. And because she is Princess Eugenie of York, a white rose of York is embroidered on the back and shoulder of the dress where the cape is. It’s really all in the details.
