South Carolina sheriff: Teen and her brother charged with murder after tow truck driver killed

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a second person was recently arrested following the shooting death of a tow truck driver.

Essence Jackson, 19, was charged with murder on Monday, the sheriff’s department said in a press release.

Her brother, 20-year-old Raheem Jackson, was also charged with murder when he was arrested on June 12, the press release said.

That same day, 46-year-old Steven Hughes of Lexington was killed in an early morning shooting, the Richland County coroner’s office said.

The shooting occurred in the 7200 block of Fairmont Road, the sheriff’s department said. That’s Columbia, near the intersection with Leesburg Road, not far from Exit 9 on Interstate 77.

The shooting was caused by a towing company repossession of a vehicle, the press release said.

No further injuries were reported.

Raheem Jackson was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said.

Sheriff’s officers attempted to execute a search and arrest warrant at Essence Jackson’s residence Monday morning, but she was not home, the release said. She was found a short time later at another location and taken into custody without further incident, the sheriff’s office said.

Jail records show that no bail has been set for either Essence or Raheem Jackson and both are being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

Despite the arrests, the Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the shooting.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or submit tips online.
