Man’s body dumped near Stuart, shooter cooperating with sheriff’s office: MCSO

A murder investigation is underway Thursday near Stuart after a man was shot and killed.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said dispatch received a call before 10 a.m. from a man who said he was with a woman who may have shot a man earlier in the day. The man told dispatch they could speak with investigators at the Home Depot in Jensen Beach, and officers arrived to speak with the two.

Sheriff William Snyder was at the scene on SE Darling Street, south of Willoughby Boulevard, where the man’s body was found. Snyder released his initial findings. The scene remains active as officers await the coroner’s report, but the sheriff’s office ruled the man’s death a homicide.

“It appears to us that the cause of death is at least a gunshot wound, perhaps more, we are being very cautious,” said Sheriff Snyder.

Snyder said the woman voluntarily went to the sheriff’s office to give a statement.

“I wouldn’t say she’s in custody. I would say she’s cooperating with law enforcement,” Sheriff Snyder said.

The woman told investigators she got into an argument with a man she knew and it escalated when she shot him. Snyder said the woman dumped the body, possibly with some help, on the dirt road of Darling Street. Snyder said the road is near the home of the man who originally called the sheriff’s office with the woman.

“I don’t know yet whether it’s murder or self-defense,” Snyder said.

Sheriff Snyder says he does not believe there is any danger to the public.

“As far as we know, we have the shooter and the victim, the scene is cordoned off and there is no danger to the public,” Snyder said.

The sheriff’s office is still trying to determine exactly where the shooting took place. Sheriff Snyder said at the scene where the body was found there was also a white pickup truck, presumably registered to the dead man, that had a bullet hole in the window.

“Crazy things are happening in the world. I was shocked!” said Marlene Rastrelli, who has lived near SE Darling Street for 46 years.

“It’s scary in this area. Very scary. I’m not sure what’s going on, but it’s not looking good with the police and everyone else involved there. It’s pretty scary,” said Gail Farrell, a Palm City resident who works not far from where the body was found.

Snyder says the sheriff’s office is working to find a motive.

“I think the question we have to answer now is motive. She admits she shot him. He’s dead. What were the circumstances? We have to find that out before we know exactly what we have,” said Sheriff Snyder.
