Coach Simoes after the game

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Coach Rafa Simoes era began with Marshall’s women’s soccer program holding Morehead State to a 1-1 tie on Thursday night in front of 903 fans at Hoops Family Field.

“It was great to have so many spectators today,” said coach Simoes. “So many people I’ve known for years (were here). Of course you want to win, but you have to work brick by brick and there are many things we need to improve. But it means the world to me to play here, where I consider my home. I’m grateful that all the fans came.”

The first crowd at Huntington was thrilled by the goal by striker Ebony Leckey in the 11th minute. The Northern Irish striker is one of 19 new signings for the new head coach.

Morehead State equalized in the 41st minute with a cross. The Eagles’ goal was one of four scoring opportunities for the visitors. The junior goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth and made three saves after an injury-shortened 2023 season.

The Herd had several opportunities to score the winning goal, including a chance from Bailey Fisherwho had previously provided the assist in the 11th minute of the game.

Marshall travels to the Northeast to face two Ivy League universities. The Herd will face Harvard on Friday, August 23rd.
