NetherRealm Studios today released a gameplay trailer for Cyrax, the first of three new Mortal Kombat characters in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is coming in September with a wealth of new content. In addition to a new story, the expansion includes Kombat Pack 2 with six characters. Three of them (Cyrax, Sektor and Noob Saibot) are from Mortal Kombat and the other three (Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian and T-1000) are guests. Today, NetherRealm Studios released a new gameplay trailer focusing on Cyrax and her role in the Khaos Reigns story.

The story aspects of the trailer confirm that part of the story will focus on Bi Han (Sub-Zero) directing the Lin Kuei to blow up Kuai Liang’s (Scorpion) wedding. Since the end of Mortal Kombat 1 and Bi Han’s betrayal of Earthrealm, Kuai Liang left the Lin Kuei to form the Shirai Ryu. Despite her misgivings, Cyrax joins Sektor on the mission and comes into conflict with Johnny Cage and Kuai Liang. According to the trailer, this event seems to have set in motion her defection from the Lin Kuei.

Review: Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 is largely a success in terms of story, gameplay, and presentation, but it is far from a flawless victory.

New look, same style

In the New Era, Cyrax is a Lin Kuei warrior from the Zaki clan who was chosen to serve directly under Sektor. Although extremely skilled, Cyrax shows signs of independence that have brought her into conflict with Sektor, to the point that it is clear that Cyrax will only serve on her terms. Unlike in the original timeline, Cyrax is not a cyborg. Rather, she and Sektor wear mechanized suits that enable their abilities.

Cyrax’s origins and lack of cyberization in the New Era may be a departure from the character’s origins, but she retains Cyrax’s moveset. This includes energy webs to catch and hold the enemy, explosive bombs to start and extend combos, and sawblades to deal raw damage. Cyrax is versatile and deadly on the ground as well as in the air. She may have a new look in the New Era, but she has the same style that one has come to expect from Cyrax.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is out September 24th. If you own Mortal Kombat 1 and Kombat Pack 1, you should grab the expansion for $49.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, or $39.99 on Switch. If you own Mortal Kombat 1 but don’t own Kombat Pack 1, you should grab the bundle for $59.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, or $49.99 on Switch. And if you don’t already own Mortal Kombat 1, you can get the collection for $89.99 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, or $79.99 on Switch.
