Charlottesville police warn of identity theft phone scam

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville police are warning of a new scam.

You’ve probably heard it before, but here’s a reminder: If you don’t recognize the number or aren’t expecting a call from the Charlottesville Police Department, do not engage in conversation with the caller.

“We learned through an anonymous tip that this scam attempt involves individuals and their personal information and/or CPD records,” said Charlottesville Police Department spokesman Kyle Ervin.

According to CPD, a scammer is posing as their service desk and asking for information. They would never do something like that.

“We want to stress that the Charlottesville Police Department will never call you and ask for personal information or payments,” Ervin said.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the CPD Service Desk and you want to make sure you are not being scammed, hang up and call the office directly. The number is (434) 970-3280.

“However, if you contact the Charlottesville Police Department and you have been a victim of this scam or have information about this scam, when you call the service desk you will be connected to a real CPD representative,” Ervin said.

If you feel you have been scammed, the CPD says you should come forward.
