Memorial service for Mike Sertich planned for September 13 – Duluth News Tribune

DULUTH – Friends, family and fans will have the opportunity to honor the life of legendary University of Minnesota Duluth hockey coach Mike Sertich on Friday, Sept. 13, at DECC Arena, where the Iron Ranger led the Bulldogs to three WCHA regular season titles.

Sertich, who also coached Grand Rapids High School to the 1975 state championship, died Thursday, August 8, at the age of 77 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The wake for the Virginia, Minnesota native will be held from noon to 2 p.m., followed by a church service at 2 p.m.

In addition to three WCHA regular season titles, Sertich led the Bulldogs hockey program to two postseason league championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances, two Frozen Fours and an appearance in the NCAA Championship Game in 1984.

Sertich coached the Bulldogs for 25 years, including 18 as head coach. He helped UMD produce three Hobey Baker Memorial Award winners, 24 NHL players and 10 Olympians. Read more about Mike Sertich’s life here.

Our newsroom occasionally reports under the name “Staff.” The “Staff” name is often used when rewriting basic news briefs from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure that requires little or no reporting. Sometimes this name is used when a story has multiple authors or when the story consists of compiling previously reported news from various sources. When outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
