“Poltergeist” house is for sale for the first time in 45 years

Now comes the goosebumps.

You could own a piece of Hollywood history: The infamous house from the 1982 horror classic Poltergeist is on the market for the first time in 45 years – without the paranormal activity, of course.

Built in 1979, this suburban horror fest in Simi Valley, California is for sale for $1.175 million.

And 4267 Roxbury Street isn’t just a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home. It’s the house where movie history was made – and where moviegoers slept with the lights on.

The film follows the Freeling family as they experience terrifying paranormal activity in their suburban home. It centers on the youngest child, Carol Anne, who is abducted by malevolent spirits through a portal in her closet.

Directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film is known for its blend of suspense and groundbreaking special effects. It became a cultural phenomenon, spawning two sequels and a remake and leaving a lasting legacy in horror cinema.

Now the home is ready for new owners who can appreciate its Hollywood lineage without fearing a trip to the other side.

When you enter, you are greeted by a light-filled living room, where, thanks to the huge windows, it is hard to imagine that anything sinister is lurking there.

The house is described as “clean,” with the current owners also adding a touch of humor.

“Yes, this is the house where much of the first film in the series was shot, but ‘This house is clean.’ It really is!” the listing jokingly states.

The formal dining room leads into the kitchen – a fan favorite that still features its original layout but is equipped with modern appliances. It’s the perfect place to make popcorn and rewatch the movie that made this home a star.

The 1,500 square foot backyard features a large in-ground pool and hot tub.

As the Zillow ad cheekily notes, it’s “ideal for cooling off on hot California days or hosting epic pool parties. Plus, it’s much safer than building a portal to another dimension!”

And with so much space, the listing even says there’s an opportunity to add a pool house or ADU for additional income.

Upstairs you’ll find four bedrooms, including a master suite with vaulted ceilings, an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet.

And don’t worry, there’s nothing supernatural about the cabinet.

Lauren Murdock of Equity Union is the owner of the listing.
