Stephen King praises new horror film as a “masterpiece” with perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating

We’re spoiled for choice when it comes to horror films this year, but if Stephen King likes something, it’s a must-see. This time, it’s a film with a flawless Rotten Tomatoes rating.

From Longlegs and MaXXXine to Immaculate and In A Violent Nature, horror movies have never been more relevant in 2024. And as if we didn’t already have enough bloodthirsty treats to watch, there’s another blockbuster on the way – and it’s got some amazing support.

Horror legend Stephen King has taken to social media to express his excitement for the new film Strange Darling, calling it a masterpiece. In case you don’t take his word for it, the film also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

“I got an early copy of Strange Darling and it’s really great,” King wrote on X/Twitter. “I’ll try to attach the trailer here because it’s also a clever masterpiece. I can’t say more than that; watch the film and you’ll understand what the trailer is trying to do.”

“Strange Darling,” which is set to hit theaters in the U.S. on August 23, is about a “crazy” one-night stand that leads to a serial killer’s brutal series of murders.

Aside from the trailer above, not a single scene has been released to the public yet, but critics are already singing King’s praises.

MN Miller of InSession Film wrote: “Strange Darling is the best thriller of the year and a chilling escape from the sweltering summer heat.”

“Although Mollner’s film looks like a proud ’70s exploitation flick, it lives in the present and manages to make some commentary about power dynamics, the deception of appearances and taking things at face value, and even the vicissitudes of love,” agreed Olga Artemyeva of ScreenAnarchy.

Elliott Collins of Movie Files added, “Strange Darling is a typical ‘WHAT DID I JUST SEE’ movie, but in the BEST way. It’s an incredibly crafted, twisty, non-linear cat-and-mouse film that will shock you along the way with all the surprises. Willa Fitzgerald delivers a world-class performance.”

While it’s widely agreed that Stranger Darling will be one of the best films of the year, there’s a catch. If you’re a British or international horror fan, you’ll have to wait a month longer than in the US to catch up on all the thrilling events.

The current release date in the UK is set for September 24. Stephen King is also working on his own horror project: the “IT” prequel “Welcome to Derry” will be in cinemas sometime next year.
