Thieves paralyze family food truck

“We just wanted to create a really good, juicy burger that has its own uniqueness,” says Jessica Salazar, co-owner of Jessica’s food truck Unique Bite, which has been serving burgers for nine years.

But since last Thursday evening, when thieves stole two generators from the truck in broad daylight, nothing has happened on the grill.

Jessica and her husband were scheduled to cater an event at Ladd & Lass Brewing in Seattle’s University District.

Surveillance video shows a white BMW SUV driving around the block several times before stopping behind the food truck – just moments after the couple set up two generators to power the kitchen.

Jessica says her husband noticed that the deep fryers were suddenly turned off.

“When my husband tried to open the door, the car was already blocked and the generators were taken away. When we were finally able to go out the front door, they were already gone with the car and the generators in the trunk,” Salazar said.

A video from the brewery shows the two men driving away with the trunk open.

The brewery owner says property crime is an ongoing problem in the area.

“Unfortunately, I know this is not an isolated incident. I know other food truck businesses have had generators stolen, so I hope this is not a new trend,” said owner Jessie Quan.

Jessica says the generators cost about $1,300 each and believes the thieves are trying to sell them online.

The couple is waiting for new employees to arrive so they can return to their business.

But this crime could keep her from leaving Seattle.

“Unfortunately, my husband does not want to return to Seattle. He thinks it is too unsafe to return, especially since we have been the target of attacks before and do not know if we will be the target of attacks again,” Salazar said.
