Man allegedly stabbed security guard at Nashville airport after telephone argument

A man arrested this week is accused of stabbing a security guard at BNA following an alleged altercation over a phone call.

Arrest documents show Matthew Howell is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police say Howell has “an extensive criminal history with numerous crimes in multiple states.”

According to the Metro Police affidavit, officers were called to the second floor of Nashville International Airport near the arrivals hall when a man showed up with a knife. An officer noticed the Intercon security guard was “bleeding profusely from his arm.”

The investigation allegedly revealed that Howell asked security staff if he could use one of their phones to make a call. The staff allegedly offered him a charger for the phone instead, which made Howell “agitated.” He then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the Intercon employees.

Howell reportedly told police he acted in self-defense. However, police say surveillance videos showed Howell “exhibiting aggressive and threatening behavior that did not indicate self-defense.”
