Kanye West’s Sunday Service loses charity status for not paying taxes

Kanye West’s gospel group Sunday Service loses its charity status for not filing tax returns.

According to Page Six, the IRS said the group lost its tax-exempt status on May 15 “for failing to file a tax return or Form 990 notice for three consecutive years.”

Sunday Service was founded in 2019 and was initially listed as a 501(c)(3) organization – making it exempt from paying federal income taxes. According to the IRS, a 501(c)(3) organization includes “religious, educational, charitable, scientific, literary, promoting public safety, sponsoring national or international amateur sports competitions, or preventing cruelty to children or animals.”

As The US Sun reported, Sunday Service has been hosting invitation-only music events for five years, coinciding with West’s ninth studio album, Jesus is KingThe father of four released the 11-track LP in 2019 via his label GOOD Music.

Jesus is King earned West a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album – making him the second most awarded rapper in Grammy history.

In a 2020 interview with Nick Cannon, West revealed how much he spent on the gospel group in its first year.

“I spent $50 million on Sunday Service last year, if you add up the operas and the flights. It was 120 people flying to Jamaica,” he told Cannon, as reported by the US Sun. “I spent every penny I had on marketing Yeezy on Sunday Service. Every dollar I had.”

The choir, conducted by Jason White, performed with Will Smith earlier this year. Smith and the choir released a song called “I Know You Can Make It.”

West was last seen attending a Sunday service in June 2023.
