The dynamic duo of Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja and Harish Shankar have reunited for Mr. Bachchan, which hit the theatres today amidst huge expectations. Without further ado, dive into our review to see how the film fares.

Story:

Anand, aka Bachchan (Ravi Teja), is a stuffy tax official who was suspended for his unwavering honesty. When he returns to his hometown, he falls in love with Jikki (Bhagyashree Borse), who soon returns his feelings. Just as things start to improve, Bachchan is reinstated and entrusted with the task of raiding the house of a powerful local personality, Mutyam Jaggaiah (Jagapathi Babu). What follows is a daring mission that tests Bachchan’s resolve and reveals unexpected challenges and twists.

Positive points:

When Mr. Bachchan’s announcement came, many were doubtful about the idea of remaking the hit film Raid. However, Harish Shankar manages to surprise by retaining the essence of the original while tailoring the story for the Telugu audience.

Ravi Teja shines in a role that seems tailor-made for him. As a determined IT officer and romantic lead with deep admiration for legends like Kishore Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, he delivers a performance full of energy and charm. His on-screen chemistry with Bhagyashree Borse is delightful and adds a refreshing touch to the narrative.

Bhagyashree Borse excels in her role and brings both glamour and emotion to the screen. Her performance will surely grab the attention of many in Tollywood. Jagapathi Babu also makes an impression, especially in his intense dialogues with Ravi Teja. The rest of the cast has done their roles well.

The film’s comedy, led by Satya, is a hit, and Mickey J. Meyer’s soundtrack brings vibrancy to the film, especially in the lively and voluminous songs. The use of retro music during romantic scenes creates a nostalgic feel that fans of Amitabh Bachchan and Kishore Kumar will appreciate.

Minus points:

Harish Shankar manages to mix elements like romance, action, comedy and punchy dialogues to entertain a wide audience, especially in the first half. However, the second half loses the thread, deviates from the main plot and introduces unnecessary comedy that dilutes the impact of the film. The lack of the same intensity and mass appeal as in the first half is striking.

Though Bhagyashree Borse shines in her role, she is underutilized in the second half as her screen time is limited and does not do justice to her character. Jagapathi Babu’s character, who is initially portrayed as a fearsome antagonist, fades in the second half and loses the impact he built earlier in the film.

The climax unfortunately feels dated and implausible, even within the genre of mass entertainment. A more sensible approach to the climactic battle could have increased the film’s appeal.

Technical aspects:

As a director, Harish Shankar does a good job of blending mass elements with comedy and romance in the first half, but the pacing and coherence of the second half could have been better. As a writer, he could have focused more on refining the second half, but when it comes to crafting punchy dialogues, he excels.

Cinematographer Ayananka Bose captures the film beautifully, especially during the singing sequences. Editor Ujwal Kulkarni could have tightened up the second half by cutting out unnecessary scenes. Mickey J Meyer’s music stands out and offers a mix of energetic pieces that add value to the film. The production quality is solid and the art department’s efforts to create a retro vibe, especially in the first half, are commendable.

Verdict:

On the whole, Mr. Bachchan has its moments but primarily appeals to a mass audience. Ravi Teja and Jagapathi Babu deliver decent performances and Bhagyashri Bose adds a touch of glamour but the second half is unconvincing due to unnecessary comedy and pacing issues. If you are a fan of Raid, the original film that inspired Mr. Bachchan, you better temper your expectations.
