North America’s first hydrogen-powered garbage truck hits the road this month

To help decarbonize one of North America’s most challenging industries, New Way and Hyzon North America first hydrogen fuel cell powered electric refuse collection vehicle (FCEV) at the Waste Expo in Las Vegas in May. The companies originally announced their partnership earlier this year. New Way’s expertise and leadership in waste collection and Hyzon’s focus on providing zero-emissions electricity are expected to make hydrogen fuel cell waste collection a reality for the North American waste and recycling industry.

The FCEVs will be tested on routes in the San Francisco Bay Area this month. Further demonstrations with customers are planned for the entire California by the end of the year. The truck will also be Los Angeles before moving north California and then with customers throughout West Canada by early 2025.

“Waste collection is an ideal application to demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen fuel cell technology across the environmental services industry,” said Eric EvansChief Product Officer for New Way. “Integrating the power and functionality of our New Way Sidewinder automated side loader and the constant and regenerative performance of Hyzon’s hydrogen fuel cell propulsion provides a lighter refuse collection vehicle with more payload compared to battery-electric vehicles, as well as similar range and performance to the diesel and CNG trucks in customers’ fleets.”

Successful tests of Hyzon’s fuel cell powered garbage collection vehicles in Australiahas demonstrated that hydrogen fuel cell technology is a viable replacement for traditional heavy-duty diesel engines, overcoming some of the inherent challenges associated with other zero-emission technologies, such as range issues, operating temperature variations, and payload limitations. To further prove that hydrogen is a more sustainable option in the waste industry, Hyzon last month launched its test program for a 200 kW Class 8 FCEV semi-trailer with major North American fleet customers, including refuse haulers.

Hyzon’s high-performance hydrogen fuel cell systems are robust enough to deliver consistent power over a range of at least 200 kilometers, including at least 1,200 cart lifts and trips to the transfer station. Combine this with the strength and durability of New Way’s most requested automated side loader – the Sidewinder XTR – with smooth arm operation, a reach of up to 3.6 meters and a large 5.5 cubic meter capacity hopper for a powerful, sustainable waste collection powerhouse.

“This hydrogen-powered garbage truck is proof of what happens when industry and technology experts come together to co-innovate and develop advanced solutions that move the industry forward,” said Don RossChief Sales Officer for New Way. “We are uniquely positioned to offer more sustainable, alternative energy to waste management companies looking to meet their zero-emissions goals, decarbonization initiatives and other clean energy needs.”
