Train and slurry truck collide in Sheboygan County; 1 dead

One person was killed in a collision between a train and a manure truck in Sheboygan County on Wednesday afternoon.

It happened just after 2 p.m. on Abbott Drive west of State Highway 57 in the town of Sherman. The sheriff’s office said a semi-trailer was hauling manure when it collided with a Wisconsin Southern train.

The driver of the semi, a 66-year-old man from Kewaskum, died at the scene. No other injuries were reported and the sheriff’s office said there is no danger to the community.

According to the sheriff’s office, the train’s locomotive and six cars were derailed – one of which lost part of its load of plastic pellets. There were about 22 cars.

The sheriff’s office said there was a “yield” sign at a railroad crossing.

Collision between train and slurry truck in Sheboygan County

Abbott Drive westbound will be closed from STH-57 until the investigation and repairs are completed, which the sheriff’s office said could take several days.

The Wisconsin State Patrol will reconstruct the accident. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Sheboygan County Hazmat Team were also on site.
