Pickleball is being taught to physical education teachers in Sumner County as the sport continues to experience a meteoric rise

GALLATIN, Tenn. (WSMV) – When Landon Hallam has free time, chances are he’s trying to spread the word about the sport of pickleball.

This week he had a great opportunity to do just that when he was asked to teach the sport to more than 150 physical education teachers in Sumner County.

“It’s pretty exciting to see the game evolve because right now there’s a lot of young and older adults playing,” Hallam said. “So if you get the younger generation playing at a younger age, it’s going to be crazy to see their evolution.”

Hallam founded the pickleball community site Dinkville, where members can find available courts and arrange games.

So what are the chances of pickleball becoming an official college sport in Tennessee? In Maryland, it is already recognized by more than two dozen high schools.

However, the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association told WSMV4 that no high school in the state has proposed pickleball as an official sport.

Hallam believes it’s only a matter of time before this changes. And it starts with teaching the younger generation how to play.

“I think this would be a great opportunity and a must-have for Tennessee,” Hallam said. “I tell all the people in the community they better learn how to play because we have some third and fourth graders that are going to be playing soon.”

Hallam sees pickleball not only as a high school sport, but also as an Olympic sport if it continues to take the world by storm.

“I think that would be great and it will definitely get there. It’s just a matter of getting it to the rest of the country,” he said.

Hallam occasionally offers free clinics to teach pickleball to beginners. You can follow these events on dinkville.com.
