Former Google CEO and Managing Director Chair Eric Schmidt is reportedly not a fan of remote work.
In a speech to students at Stanford University, Schmidt said Google’s remote work offering had caused the company to fall behind in the artificial intelligence (AI) competition, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday (August 14), citing a video of the event.
“Google has decided that work-life balance, early finishes and working from home are more important than winning,” Schmidt said, according to the report.
Schmidt also explained to the students that if they wanted to start a startup, they would have to require their employees to work in an office because, according to the report, successful startups “work like the devil.”
Google has stepped up its efforts to get its employees to work in the office, announcing that they will return to the office three days a year in 2022. Week, and starting in 2023, office attendance will be a factor in annual performance reviews, the report said.
Company employees will spend at least three days per week in the office, as they have for the past two years, with occasional opportunities to work from home. Any employees not working from home who violate these policies will be reminded of these policies.
Some companies have made changes to their Working from home guidelines.
It was reported in May the Walmart ended most Remote work and asked employees in small offices in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto is expected to move to central hubs such as the retailer’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, as well as Hoboken, New Jersey, or Northern California. Walmart will continue to allow its employees to work from home part-time.
In July 2023 Amazon increased his Return to the office Mandate across the country by telling employees who work from home or Position in smaller satellite offices that may need to return to what the company calls “main locations,” including Seattle, New York And San Francisco.
