Bystanders helped rescue a driver from his dump truck on Route 31 near Richmond after it overturned and lost a significant amount of fuel, causing a hazardous materials accident.

The Richmond Township Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle entrapment crash to Route 31 and West Solon Road in the unincorporated neighborhood of Richmond around 5:13 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters arrived on scene within six minutes and found a dump truck with a trailer and other road equipment involved in an accident with a pickup truck, fire officials said.

The accident caused a significant fuel leak from the truck.

The pickup truck involved sustained minor damage in the incident, fire officials said.

The driver of the dump truck had got out of the cab and was walking. He was examined and refused transport to the hospital.

The man was rescued from the cab of the truck by passers-by before the fire brigade arrived.

The occupants of the pickup were still in their vehicle. They were examined and refused transport to the hospital.

Due to the fuel leak, the incident was upgraded to a box alarm level through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), fire officials said.

Numerous fire departments from throughout McHenry County responded to the emergency call.

The fuel leak was contained and the MABAS alarm was triggered.

Fire officials said cleanup at the scene was handled by a private towing company with assistance from the Richmond Township Road District.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the accident. Richmond Police assisted with traffic control.

Route 31 from Harts Road to Tryon Grove Road was closed during the incident. It reopened shortly before 9 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
