Truck loaded with gravel overturns on the Lower Hudson Valley Bridge

According to officials, a semi-trailer truck overturned and crashed onto one of the area’s busiest bridges, causing long delays and, unfortunately, a lot of inconvenience for motorists.

New York State Police said the accident occurred early Wednesday morning around 5:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the bridge. The truck was carrying gravel that spread across the entire road and blocked lanes, police reports said.

According to 511 NY, delays ranged from 90 minutes to two hours. Police advised commuters to take alternate routes to avoid the area, LoHud reports.

LoHud reports that two other vehicles were involved in the accident, but no serious injuries were reported. The truck was recovered by emergency crews around 7:40 a.m., LoHud says.

According to Road Traffic, the 3.1-mile-long Governor Mario M Cuomo Bridge (or New Tappan Zee Bridge) is used by more than 140,000 motorists daily and connects Rockland and Westchester counties.

More vehicles have landed on this bridge than any other in New York State

But Park Street and Glenville are not the state’s reigning champions when it comes to being run over by semi-trucks.

According to the Greenwich Times, the King Street Bridge on the border between Rye Brook, NY and Greenwich, CT, where the Hutch meets the Merritt Parkway, has been hit by bridge failures more often than any other bridge in New York State.

The Times reported in 2019 that the bridge had been hit nearly 150 times in the past decade alone.

In recent years, measures have been taken to add more warning signs to the King Street Bridge and put up more signs on I-287 warning trucks not to enter the Hutchinson Parkway. However, vehicles have crashed into bridges in New York state at least 344 times in 2021, according to data from the state Department of Transportation and the Thruway Authority.
