Conflict of interest revealed in decision on Jordan Chile’s medal

A conflict of interest in the decision to annul the results of the women’s floor exercise final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which the American Jordanian chilis to lose third place was announced.

Hamid G. Gharavithe chairman of the three-member tribunal for sport that ruled on Romania’s complaint previously served as Romania’s legal adviser on disputes at the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, and his work for the Romanians goes back nearly a decade, according to documents the New York TimesArbitrators at the Court of Arbitration for Sport are required to disclose conflicts of interest before the start of hearings. According to the court, Gharavi did so and there were no objections from the parties involved.

“In accordance with the International Bar Association (IBA) Conflict of Interest Guidelines, CAS has no grounds to remove an arbitrator who makes such a disclosure if the parties do not object to his appointment,” the Court of Arbitration of Sports said in a statement.

The court will not reconsider its decision, said a statement from USA Gymnastics, which ESPN on Monday (August 12) and vowed to continue his efforts to help Chile retain the bronze medal.

“USA Gymnastics was informed on Monday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that CAS rules do not allow for a reconsideration of an arbitration award, even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said. “We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue all possible avenues and appeals, including the Swiss Federal Court, to ensure Jordan’s fair scoring, placing and medal award.”

The International Gymnastics Federation changed that Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosa finished third in the women’s floor exercise final after the Court of Arbitration for Sport changed the final rankings:

Following the publication of Decision CAS OG 24/15 by the Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the FIG confirms that the results of the Women’s Floor Exercise Final on Monday 5 August 2024 will be amended as follows, in accordance with this Decision:

The original score of 13,666 for Jordan Chiles (USA) is restored.

The rankings of the women’s floor exercise final have been adjusted accordingly. Ana Barbosu (ROU) is in third place with a score of 13.766.

The court ruled that the US coach’s appeal Cecile Landi which resulted in Chiles adding an extra 0.1 to her score, came outside the one-minute time window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), although USA Gymnastics said there is now video evidence to prove otherwise. The CAS said the Brazilian’s original order Rebecca AndradeBiles and Barbosu were expected to be reinstated, while Chiles would finish fifth behind Barbosu’s Romanian teammate. Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.

The court said the FIG would ultimately make the decision on the final official order at the finish, but said it was done “in accordance with the above decision.” The podium with Andrade, Biles and Chiles marked the first time in Olympic history that a gymnasts’ podium featured three black women.

Chiles had previously won gold in the women’s all-around final.
