The owner of a 5-acre property in the village of Old Field made custom cabinets, stairs and railings from wood he harvested from his own property. As a carpenter, he was familiar with the material.

The six-bedroom, three-bathroom home in East Setauket, renovated over the course of eight years, is for sale for nearly $2.5 million. Annual taxes on the property, which is part of the Three Village School District, total $33,187.

“It was a full-time project for him to recreate the house based on the model of an Arts and Crafts style home on the West Coast,” said broker Michael O’Dwyer, who is listing the property with Holly Brainard for Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. “Every piece of wood you touch in the house feels like butter, it’s just so beautifully prepared and finished.”

Designated spaces inside the 5,000-square-foot home include a great room, media room, kitchen, and attached two-car garage. The home is cooled by central air conditioning and heated by oil, baseboards, and a heat pump. Outside, there’s a porch swing, private backyard, and a detached two-car garage.

Although there are bedrooms on each of the home’s two floors, the design reflects a style known as “reverse living,” Brainard said. The main living spaces — kitchen, dining room, living room, wraparound porch — are on the second floor.

“He designed the house after Greene and Greene, who are well-known architects in California,” Brainard said. “Many of their architectural designs were reverse-housing.”

Within walking distance of the property is the Flax Pond Association’s private beach. Annual dues are $400, Brainard said.

The house is located among large walnut trees and is surrounded by forests.

“It’s the perfect place for someone who loves nature,” O’Dwyer said.

In winter, you can see the water from the house, he added.
