The St. Clair Shores Cultural Committee is sponsoring a walking tour of Detroit’s historic Elmwood Cemetery on Sunday, September 15.
The historic Elmwood Cemetery, located near Mt. Elliot and East Lafayette streets, is the oldest continuously operating non-denominational cemetery in Detroit. The cemetery was established in 1846 and incorporated as a non-profit corporation by an act of the Michigan Legislature in 1849.
In honor of International Underground Railroad Month, tour participants will join Jamon Jordan, the official historian for the City of Detroit, for a tour of Elmwood Cemetery, exploring the history and context of the Underground Railroad in Detroit and Michigan. Elmwood is a significant site in the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
Walking tour participants will board the bus at the St. Clair Shores Library at 10:15 a.m. on September 15. The bus will arrive at the cemetery at 11 a.m. and the tour will last until 1 p.m. Estimated return time to the library is approximately 2 p.m.
This tour operates regardless of weather conditions, so the St. Clair Shores Cultural Committee asks participants to plan accordingly.
Tickets can be purchased at the St. Clair Shores Library for $15 and go on sale August 15. The library is located at 22500 E. 11 Mile Rd, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081. Tickets are non-refundable.
