• Mount Rainier, the country’s fifth national park, opened in 1899, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The park has become a popular tourist destination, welcoming more than 2 million visitors annually.
• The two top bestsellers in fiction are “Hannibal” by Thomas Harris and “Granny Dan” by Danielle Steel.

1974 – 50 years ago

• Oakwood Methodist Church near Millville is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The congregation was founded in 1869 and the church was built and dedicated in 1874.
• The electric CitiCar Vanguard-Sebring is currently manufactured in Sebring, Florida. It costs $2,390 and can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge and reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour.

1949 – 75 years ago

• Bernhard LeVander, an attorney and chairman of the Minnesota Republican State Central Committee, will speak at the Blooming Prairie Gun Club meeting. All are invited regardless of political affiliation. (Bernhard was the brother of Governor Harold LeVander.)
• A young man in a rented Piper Cub airplane was circling over the communities of Chatfield and Stewartville. Shortly after illegally piloting the plane, he crashed and suffered minor injuries. The Rochester Municipal Court found him guilty of flying without a license and fined him $200.

1924 – 100 years ago

• The president of the exhibition association announced that he would declare war on drivers who park on Golden Hills and thereby deprive the exhibition association of parking fees for the stands.
• Catherin Cates won the championship in the Rochester women’s tennis tournament hosted by the YWCA. Cates defeated Barbara Van Tuyl 6-0, 6-1.
• Mary Massey of the Massey Co. will arrive home by train tonight after a fall shopping trip in New York.
