Two women were hospitalized in northern Arizona on Monday after being struck by lightning.
A severe storm brought heavy rain to the area and many people were caught in the rainstorm at Horseshoe Bend, according to authorities. A 22-year-old and a 23-year-old woman, one from the Netherlands and one from Australia, were injured by the lightning strike, according to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Authorities said Page police, fire and National Park Service officers responded to the area and found two people struck by lightning at the Horseshoe Bend overlook.
Officials and rangers had to temporarily evacuate the area so helicopters could land and transport victims from the area, Page police said. Page firefighters and NPS personnel assisted the victims until they could be airlifted away from the crash scene.
According to the park authority, both victims were flown to St. George Regional Hospital in Utah.
