Search for British Royal Caribbean International passenger suspended near Croatia

Rescue teams on Sunday called off their search for a young British man who fell from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship into the waters off Croatia early Friday morning.

The passenger, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, fell overboard into the Adriatic Sea in the early hours of the morning while on a voyage aboard the cruise company’s Explorer of the Seas cruise ship, local Croatian news agencies reported.

The man fell into waters near the uninhabited island of Jabuka, nearly 30 metres from the ship, local news channel 24 SATA reported.

Royal Caribbean crew members who witnessed the man fall immediately threw a life preserver but could not see him in the water, the station said.

A large-scale multi-agency search operation from both sea and air was launched under the leadership of the National Center for the Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue Operations and continued throughout the weekend.

Rescuers hoped that if the Briton survived the fall, he would also be able to survive in the warmer waters of the Adriatic at this time of year.

“The survival time in these conditions is more than 12 hours and the search takes twice as long, at least 24 hours,” Radovan Linić, the coordinator of the search and rescue agency, told 24 SATA in Croatian.

But after a three-day search, rescue teams were unable to find the missing man and officially called off the search at around 2 p.m. on Sunday, Croatian news portal HRT reported.

The seven-day Royal Caribbean cruise from Greece was en route to Zadar when the man fell into the sea.

Another passenger on board the cruise ship said she was awakened at around 3:40 a.m. by the emergency announcement, “Oscar Oscar Oscar to port. Man overboard,” she reported on X.

The ship abandoned its berth in Zadar but continued on its way after hours of searching until the Croatian coast guard took over the immediate search, wrote Nicole Bullock.

The Post has contacted Royal Caribbean for comment.

In May, a man reportedly jumped from Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, on the first night of his week-long voyage, shortly after the ship left Florida. His body was recovered and pronounced dead.

A month earlier, a presumably drunk 20-year-old man had allegedly jumped from the Royal Caribbean Company’s Liberty of the Seas while on vacation with his family as it sailed between Cuba and the Bahamas.
