Eli Spaulding misses cut at US Amateur

Eli Spaulding of Freeport shot 8 over par 80 in the second round of the U.S. Amateur golf tournament at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minneapolis, and missed the cut on Tuesday.

Spaulding, who qualified for the tournament by winning the Maine Amateur Championship in June, shot 6-over 76 in the first round on Monday and finished 14 over par.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers’ defense of their NBA Cup title begins on November 15 in San Antonio against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, and Klay Thompson will return to Golden State as a guest with Dallas on November 12.

The NBA released the schedule of group games on Tuesday. The games will take place on several Tuesdays and Fridays from November 12th to December 3rd. Each team will be assigned to a group of five and will play once against the other four clubs in that group.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the Lakers won the tournament last season – back then it was still simply called the In-Season Tournament – 7-0, beating the Indiana Pacers in the final in Las Vegas. The semifinals and finals will take place in Las Vegas again this year, with the semifinals on December 14 and the final on December 17.

The reigning NBA champions Boston Celtics begin their NBA Cup game against Atlanta on November 12. They also have group games against Cleveland, Washington and Chicago on the schedule.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: DeeDee Hagemann, a three-year starter at Michigan State, has transferred to Memphis for her final season, Tigers coach Alex Simmons announced.

Hagemann averaged 12.3 points and 5.3 assists per game last season and was named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Hagemann started all 30 games at guard last season and led the Big Ten with a Michigan State-record 2.84 assists-to-turnover ratio. She made 41% of her 3-pointers and 76.5% of her free throws.

TENNIS: Matthew Forbes won the USTA boys’ under-18 singles national title, securing a spot at the US Open later this month.

If Forbes enrolls for his freshman year at Michigan State University this year as planned, he will not be able to win the $100,000 minimum prize money at the Grand Slam tennis tournament.

Forbes defeated Jack Kennedy in a four-set match on Sunday in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to secure a wildcard entry into the U.S. Open with a record $75 million in player compensation.

FOOTBALL

PREMIER LEAGUE: Manchester United have signed Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and Moroccan full-back Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.

The 25-year-old De Ligt signed a five-year contract with an option to extend for a further year.

The 26-year-old Mazraoui, who can play as a right-back or left-back, has a contract until June 2028, with the option to extend for a further year.

• English striker Cole Palmer has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at Chelsea until 2033, the Premier League club said.

Palmer joined from Manchester City in September last year and was one of the best players in the Premier League, finishing the season with 22 goals – behind only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland – to secure a place in England’s squad for the European Championships.

TOUR de FRANCE FOR WOMEN: Reigning women’s Tour de France champion Demi Vollering won a short, sharp time trial through the streets of Rotterdam to take the overall leader’s yellow jersey from fellow Dutchwoman Charlotte Kool in the third stage of this year’s Tour.

Vollering’s victory was the Dutch riders’ third victory in three stages of the eight-stage Tour, which began in the Netherlands.

Vollering, of Team SD Worx-Protime, finished the 6.3-kilometer race over tram tracks and bridges in downtown Rotterdam in 7 minutes and 25 seconds. Her victory came hours after Kool beat another Dutch rider, Lorena Wiebes, at the finish line in the second stage.
