Man drowns near Adler Planetarium, 17-year-old still missing in Indiana – NBC Chicago

A man died Tuesday afternoon at 12th Street Beach on Chicago’s Northerly Island near the Adler Planetarium after two men jumped into Lake Michigan despite warnings not to enter the water, according to a witness.

The Chicago Fire Department said the two men were taken to the hospital, but one of them died.

“He was huffing and puffing, and the other man, no later than 35 minutes later, was pulled out and tried to give him aid,” Sebastian Reyes, who told NBC Chicago he witnessed the incident.

Meanwhile, rescue workers in Beverly Shores, Indiana, are still searching for a missing 17-year-old who went underwater near the Indiana Dunes on Tuesday afternoon. However, weather conditions on Lake Michigan allowed rescue workers to remain on shore on Wednesday.

“The water is still a little rough, the boats can’t get close enough to shore to conduct a productive search,” said Fire Chief Jay Craig Jr. of Porter, Indiana.

Unlike Illinois beaches, where warning flags warn swimmers when a visit to the water is dangerous, Indiana beaches do not have flags, according to authorities.

“There is no marking system,” said Fire Chief Andy Himan of Beverly Shores, Indiana. “The beaches are never closed, with the exception of the state park.”

Dave Benjamin of the Great Lakes Surf Water Rescue Project said that while some beaches have life preservers, he is concerned about the lack of lifeguards in Indiana.

“There should be someone here. We have one person, unfortunately tragically, a 17-year-old boy is missing in the water right now,” said Benjamin.

“It’s a very steep beach,” he said. “If you go out ten feet, it’s six feet deep. So if your little child gets pulled out just a few feet, they’ll be in over their head.”

According to the Great Lakes Surf Water Rescue Project, at least 37 people have drowned in Lake Michigan this year.
