2024 DNC Chicago: Some businesses close for Democratic National Convention as Chicago police and Secret Service try to address concerns

CHICAGO (WLS) — Security measures around the United Center were further increased on Tuesday, with the Democratic National Convention now less than a week away.

The Secret Service and city government have assured the public that the DNC will be safe, but because of this, some local businesses are being forced to close their doors during the convention.

Tuesday was the last in a series of security meetings held by the city and Secret Service in the run-up to the DNC. As more fencing was erected around the United Center, officials attempted to allay any remaining concerns about public safety.

The security planning for the DNC, which has been going on for more than a year, is now in its final stages. The expansion of the security fence around the United Center and now also around McCormick Place continues, with just six days to go before the convention.

“I am confident that our plan will ensure a safe environment during the DNC,” said Derek Mayer of the Secret Service Chicago.

City leaders conducted a final planning exercise to go over every little detail and make sure nothing was overlooked.

“Let me be clear: The City of Chicago is ready to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention,” said Chicago Chief Operating Officer John Roberson.

The Chicago police promised that their officers would protect not only the grounds around the convention, but also the neighborhoods.

But in the West Loop, one spa owner is taking no chances and will close during the DNC to avoid inconvenience and safety concerns.

“I mean, the protests lately are not staying peaceful. So, I don’t know. It’s so unpredictable. I just think it’s a combination of a lot of different states of chaos,” said Stephanie Wolf, co-owner of Vitahl Medical Aesthetics.

Others, however, do not worry about security and instead hope that the conference will boost their business.

“Absolutely. Because before, when people came to visit before COVID, we had a lot of tourism,” says Imrana Zafar, owner of Eyelashes R Us.

Because the planned large-scale protests raise potential security concerns, the city is repairing old cameras and installing new ones to ensure they can monitor key areas related to the convention.

“We are monitoring everything we can at this location and we are working with our federal partners to ensure that there are no major incidents in this area,” said CPD Supervisor Larry Snelling.

Protest groups had filed a lawsuit against the city to allow them to express their views on the war in Gaza within sight and hearing distance of the United Center.

But a judge ruled Monday that the city’s plan to hold protesters more than 3 miles east of the convention grounds complies with the First Amendment and safety concerns, allowing the city to keep its plan going.

“We are here to showcase our city,” Roberson said. “We are here at this moment to show that Chicago can shine. We are here to demonstrate that we can host the most democratic of activities at this moment, the nomination of a person to the highest office in our land, and to make room and space for the full exercise of our First and Fourth Amendment rights to the Constitution.”

Snelling said the department will remain flexible and able to respond to anything that might happen, and they will continually gather information from social media and other sources to stay ahead of potential problems.
