Out-of-town trucker picks up $50,000 Powerball winner at Hagerstown rest stop

August 7, 2024 – A pit stop in Maryland last month resulted in a $50,000 prize pool for the third division Powerball Victory for a traveling Texas truck driver. The San Benito resident then called his son to help him check his numbers. “He said, ‘Dad, you almost won the jackpot,'” the winner recalled. “But then he told me it was $50,000.” The player had four white balls and the red Powerball to the third division victory.

The happy father then invited all his family members to a group call to share the exciting news.

However, he was faced with a dilemma as to how to claim his prize. Powerball Rules state that a winning ticket must be redeemed in the state in which it was purchased, so that meant a trip back to Maryland to claim the $50,000 prize.

After explaining the situation to his company, the winner’s managers arranged a work route that would take the winner through Maryland again. He scheduled a time to collect the prize that coincided with his work trip. His wife accompanied him and joined her husband at the Lottery Winner’s Circle in Baltimore.

“We are so happy for him,” she said.

The Cameron County man told lottery officials he might be lucky. Before winning, he had matched four numbers on a Powerball Ticket a few weeks earlier. The grateful player said he wanted to put the $50,000 winnings into his retirement savings.
