State Rep. JA Moore says he was threatened by an armed man near Park Circle

Democratic Rep. JA Moore said Tuesday he was threatened by a man with a gun near Park Circle, describing the incident as “deeply disturbing.”

Moore said that as he was pulling into a parking lot to pick up his daughter from her first day of school, a black truck driven by a white man, around 60 years old, approached him. The man threatened Moore with a gun, which he said left him “deeply concerned for the safety of his family and the wider community.”

Moore contacted North Charleston police after the incident. News 4 reached out to North Charleston police to confirm the details of Moore’s account.

“First and foremost, I want to thank the officers who responded to this horrific incident,” Moore said. “Their quick actions are appreciated and it reminds us of the difficult and dangerous situations they face every day to keep our community safe.”

After the incident, Moore stressed that legislation must focus on combating gun violence, a crisis that has also affected his family. His sister, Myra Thompson, was killed in the 2015 mass shooting at Mother Emanual AME Church in Charleston.

“This incident is a stark reminder of how much work remains to be done to protect our neighborhoods from gun violence,” Moore said. “We must come together to ensure every family feels safe in their home and community. I remain committed to this cause, now more than ever.”
