Black bear killed near Red Lodge after attacking girl in tent • Daily Montanan

A black bear that is believed to have attacked and injured a small child in a tent at a private campground south of Red Lodge on Sunday night was captured and killed by game wardens on Monday, a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman said Tuesday.

The attack occurred on Sunday around 10 p.m. and affected a young black bear, according to FWP.

NBC Montana reported that the child attacked was a 3-year-old girl. A FWP spokesperson referred questions about the girl’s age and condition to the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, which said Tuesday afternoon it was not involved in the incident and could not provide further details.

FWP said the child was taken to a hospital in Billings. Wardens and bear experts worked with the campground owner to clear the campground by the next morning and set up traps and snares to capture the bear, spokeswoman Chrissy Webb said.

The bear was caught on Monday afternoon and then shot.

FWP guards found garbage, a cooler and human food in and around the tent where the girl was attacked, the FWP said.

“The black bear involved in the incident had no history of conflict,” Webb said in a news release. “However, the bear was likely habituated to food and humans after finding unsecured bait in the area.”

FWP said the bear’s physical characteristics matched evidence at the scene and the agency believes the euthanized bear is the same bear that attacked the girl. Webb told the Daily Montanan that FWP took DNA samples to confirm if it was the same bear.

Webb said the region has seen a slight increase in bear activity over the past few months compared to normal, but Red Lodge is often a hotspot for bear activity.

Black and grizzly bears are found throughout Montana. As fall approaches, they are more likely to search for any food source they can find. This is when they begin hyperphagia – a period in which they eat and drink as often as possible in preparation for hibernation.

People living or camping in bear country at any time of year are advised to keep food and smelly items out of their tents, use bear-proof containers or hangers for food and garbage, and follow local food storage regulations.
