Lincoln Fire Department investigates fire at debris field in Woods Park

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – The Lincoln Fire Department is investigating a fire that broke out early Tuesday morning at one of the city’s tree trimming collection sites.

According to LFR spokesperson MJ Lierman, emergency crews responded to a report of a brush fire in Woods Park, near 33rd and O Streets, at approximately 2:30 a.m. Firefighters extinguished the fire and remained on scene to monitor and extinguish remaining hot spots.

Lierman said the Lincoln Fire Department and Emergency Services are working with the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department to determine if the pile of tree debris at the accident site needs to be relocated.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“Thank you to Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews for their quick response to the Woods Assembly Site fire this morning,” said Maggie Stuckey-Ross, Lincoln Parks and Recreation Director.

Stuckey-Ross said Parks and Forestry Service staff continue to work to reduce collection points while other personnel address more than 1,000 reports of tree problems following the July 31 storm.

Three waste collection sites, including Woods Park, will remain open until Monday, August 19. Residents can dispose of storm debris free of charge at the following locations:

  • Star City Shore, 4375 p. 33. Court
  • Woods Park, southern lot on “J” Street
  • Oak Lake Park, Sun Valley Boulevard and Charleston Street

Crews will continue grinding at the now-closed Holmes Lake site and then move to Woods Park. Once grinding is complete, they will move to Oak Lake Park, according to Lincoln Parks and Rec.

In addition, workers will begin transporting tree debris from the Seng Park site to the Star City Shores collection point on Wednesday.

Lincoln Parks and Rec offers free wood chip mulch on a first come, first served basis at the following Lincoln locations. The mulch may not be used for commercial purposes.

  • Bowling Lake Park Parking Lot, NW 48th and West Cuming Street
  • Fleming Fields Parking Lot, 31st Street and Leighton Avenue
  • Holmes Lake Park, parking lot five, 70th Street and North Shore Drive
