A new Fresh Mex restaurant is being built in this popular new development near Columbia.

A growing chain offering popular “fresh Mexican” dishes like burritos, quesadillas and more is planning a new location in a popular commercial area in Forest Acres.

Surcheros, which has numerous locations in Georgia and Florida and recently announced expansion efforts in Tennessee, will open a location at 4609 Forest Drive Suite 2 in the Cardinal Crossing complex. Surcheros will be located next to a Yoga Six location and across the street from Nothing Bundt Cakes.

Forest Acres city officials said plans for Surcheros have been reviewed and approved. Construction was still underway when a reporter drove by Tuesday morning. The restaurant could open in November, according to a Surcheros news release.

The Forest Acres location will be one of four Surcheros the company plans to open in the Columbia area over the next few years, the company said.

“Columbia has always been a target market for us with its strong business community, family presence and vibrant student body,” said Jake Philpotts, vice president of business development at Surcheros, in a statement.

Andrew Powell, a two-decade veteran in the restaurant industry, will be the franchisee for Forest Acres Surcheros.

“We chose to partner with Surcheros for several reasons, including their commitment to using the freshest ingredients and their strong focus on community involvement,” Powell said. “What really stood out to us was how committed they are to the communities they serve. We’d like to bring that commitment to Columbia and become an active, supportive part of the community.”

Cardinal Crossing continues to be a thriving commercial development in the heart of Forest Acres, offering a variety of restaurants and shops including Yoga Six, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, Clean Juice and more.

It is located in a high-traffic area, with more than 27,000 cars traveling down Forest Drive each day, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
