Julia Louis-Dreyfus moderates a panel with eight Democratic governors at the DNC

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is partnering with the Democratic Governors Association during the week of the 2024 Democratic National Convention to shine a spotlight on the nation’s female governors.

The Emmy-winning Veep And Seinfeld Star, producer and activist will moderate a day-long discussion on August 21, the third day of the upcoming four-day convention in Chicago, featuring the country’s eight Democratic female governors: Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Maine Governor Janet Mills, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek.

“I am honored to host this conversation with America’s Democratic governors as our party comes together in Chicago to celebrate,” Louis-Dreyfus said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “During their time in office, Democratic female governors have made history, changed the conversation about women in leadership, and accomplished great things for the good people of their states. They have broken marble ceilings and demonstrated outstanding leadership. Their voices are indispensable. I look forward to our conversation and the opportunity to shine a spotlight on these successful leaders.”

The event comes as Veep is making a comeback this summer, both on social media and in viewership—the series saw a whopping 350 percent increase in viewership following the July 21 announcement that President Joe Biden would not seek re-election, pushing Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the list for the 2024 presidential election. The real-life events mirrored the storylines of Veep — HBO’s Emmy-winning political satire, which ran for seven seasons and starred Louis-Dreyfus as the first female vice president who became the first female president — that Louis-Dreyfus, creator Armando Ianucci and showrunner David Mandel all agreed to the Veep-Resurgence and how memes from the show re-circulated during Harris’ campaign.

“Female candidates are under more scrutiny,” Louis-Dreyfus said recently of the comparisons between Harris and her fictional character Selina Meyer. “That’s the reality and we responded to that and used it to our comedic advantage. There’s an episode where a character suggests Selina start a speech with ‘As a woman,’ and she says, ‘I don’t identify as a woman! People mustn’t know that! Men hate that and women who hate women hate that, which I think is true of most women.’ So we used that as a lot of cannon fodder.”

The panel of governors, which represents more than 43 million Americans nationwide, has led the way on a number of key issues, including economic growth, better access to health care and child care, increased funding for public education, tax cuts for hard-working families, higher education affordability, addressing the housing and mental health crises, and protecting and expanding reproductive rights.

The eight women have formed a friendship in their distinguished positions, with the governors sharing meals, short walks and conversations, as well as thoughts and emotional support via a group chat, as they recently revealed in a Elle special feature.

The conversation, moderated by Louis-Dreyfus, will focus on this historic class of women in state leadership, as well as the DGA Women Governors Fund. Since 2018, the DGA has invested more than $80 million in states and campaigns to elect and re-elect this group, and also launched the Women Governors Fund, dedicated to electing Democratic women governors.

“Julia Louis-Dreyfus brings the same passion and intensity that drives her successful on-screen career to her off-screen projects, including her decades of work as an advocate and activist fighting to protect abortion rights, voting rights and democracy, and combating climate change,” said Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, Chair of the DGA Women Governors Fund. “We share a common goal to support and elect more women candidates at all levels of government – including governor, Congress and, of course, the presidency – but we know all too well that women candidates face more obstacles on the path to higher office than their male counterparts. As Democratic governors, we have changed what it means – and what it looks like – to be a public servant.”
