A press release from the Alexandria Police Department said officers shot and killed a man in the stairwell of an apartment building off I-395 at around 10:46 p.m. on Monday, August 12.

According to the press release:

On August 12, at approximately 10:46 p.m., Alexandria Police officers responded to a 911 call at 5101 Maris Ave. When they arrived at the building, officers were met in the stairwell by a subject armed with a firearm. The encounter ended in an officer-involved shootout. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is being conducted by the regional Critical Incident Response Team.

There are no reports of further injuries related to the incident.
