Photographer tells the bride the “truth” about her appearance at the wedding and is criticized for it

An amateur photographer faced heavy criticism online after sharing controversial comments about a bride’s appearance during her wedding.

In a now-viral post on the popular Reddit subreddit r/AmITheA******, user StrongRecover741 explained that she recently photographed her brother’s wedding.

In the post, she asked if she was wrong to tell the bride “the truth” about her appearance. The 24-year-old explained that she had been asked by her brother Jake to photograph his wedding. Jake’s bride Chelsea had opted for bright green contact lenses, a choice that the photographer felt did not suit her natural facial features.

“Chelsea showed me her wedding makeup and she was wearing these bright green contacts. They looked extremely reptilian on her because they didn’t match her undertone,” the Reddit user said.

Despite initial advice, the bride decided to stick with the daring look for her special day.

During the wedding, the photographer’s concerns about the contact lenses grew and, according to the Reddit post, she showed Jake some pictures and then asked Chelsea if she should edit the contrast to tone down the intensity of the contact lenses.

However, the bride was upset and accused the photographer of calling her ugly on her wedding day, prompting her to leave early to avoid conflict.

The story received thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments from people criticizing the woman for her comments.

“YTA (You’re the A******). Giving her advice before the wedding was fine,” wrote Redditor v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y. “There was absolutely no reason to show them pictures, give them advice, or ask them about editing ON THE WEDDING DAY.”

Another user, quats555, pointed out that the photographer crossed a line by mixing personal and professional opinions: “You stated your opinion once. It sounds like you mixed your personal opinion (‘her style choices can be a bit wild at times’) with your professional opinion on the contacts, which makes me a little suspicious of your motivation. But still, once is OK.”

Professional wedding photographer Jane Iskra, owner of ISKRA Photography Studio, told Newsweek: “When photographing people on a special day like a wedding, it is very important to be careful about how you talk about their appearance, especially when it comes to the bride.

“Instead of saying something didn’t look right, the photographer could have asked questions like, ‘What do you think of the photos?’ or ‘Would you like me to make any changes?’ This way the bride can share her opinion without feeling like she’s being criticized.”

Iskra stressed that the key to wedding photography is to maintain a positive atmosphere so that the couple feels confident and satisfied with their photos.
