Afghan women and girls fight for their rights after three years of Taliban rule

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan have been severely restricted.

The Taliban have issued at least 70 decrees and policies that directly target the autonomy, rights and daily lives of women and girls. Women face severe restrictions in accessing education, employment, reproductive rights, maternity care, mental health care and more.

Yet Afghan women continue to show remarkable resilience and courage. From the seemingly simple act of leaving their homes to the more complex tasks of running businesses, organizing communities, and fighting for equality, their resolve is unwavering and, in some cases, growing even stronger.
